Hello Coriander,
I'm not current with the DAFx literature, but a general comment: presumably you yourself are convinced of the novelty of the contribution. If you haven't already, make sure that the Abstract and Introduction make clear and explicit the novel contribution of the paper. I've heard people say that one purpose of the Introduction is to convince the reviewers that the paper is sufficiently novel to accept, I'm not sure about that. With respect to situating your work within the research landscape (i.e. other's related work, your past work), make sure that you really have searched high and low for related work (especially at the publishing venue and closely associated publications such as JAES) and that the related work section clearly positions your contribution in relation to existing work. These two things will go a long way to separating a "nice idea" paper from a "serious attempt at a contribution to the research literature" paper. Finally, the reviewers will make their own judgments on novelty and contribution. Perhaps I'm oversharing here but in my experience as both a reviewer for and submitter to other conferences (not DAFx) reviewer's opinion on novelty and contribution can vary wildly. Good luck, Ross.
