Actually, MIDI is exactly what I am trying to avoid.  It is poor for
percussion doesn't work well for the fast stuff I am working on.  Also, MIDI
has been done and I'm trying to take the next step.

I think MIDI would be more appropriate in this case, assuming you are using 
a Soft synth residing on the same machine.
