Hi! I am currently doing my 6 months master's thesis in MPEG Audio Layer 2
coding at Uppsala University in Sweden. I am now trying to implement
Psychoacoustic Model 1, but there is one thing that I can't understand. As I
understand it, Psychoacoustic Model 1 can also be used for mp3, so I hope
I'm not off-topic. What I can't understand is why you would want to use the
scale factors in the calculation of the sound pressure level. On page 110 in
11172-3 the formula for the calculation of the sound pressure level for each
subband is
L_sb(n) = MAX[ X(k), 20*log10(scf_max(n)*32768)-10 ], X(k) in subband n
scf_max(n) is the maximum scale factor in subband n.
Why not just use
L_sb(n) = MAX[ X(k) ], X(k) in subband n
instead?
I am very grateful for any help!
Thanks!
