Hi all,

I am the author of xmcd, a GPL'ed CD player program for UNIX and Linux
platforms. In the next version of xmcd I am adding the capability to
rip CDs to MP3 files. It uses LAME (makes calls to the libmp3lame library
directly) to accomplish this.

My question is, what is the legality status of distributing xmcd binaries
that links to libmp3lame? Would I be liable to Fraunhofer/Thompson's
patent royalties? I don't make any money with xmcd and cannot pay
such royalties. Moreover, wouldn't it violate the GPL that xmcd itself
is released under?

I will release the source code to xmcd, of course.

If this is a topic that had come up before, I apologize. I had joined
this list only recently and did not find a definitive answer to my
questions in the archives.

Thanks for your insights.
