try this:
amnenion@xover:~/testr > mp3info test.mp3
test.mp3 does not have an ID3 1.x tag.

amnenion@xover:~/testr > mp3info -a testartist test.mp3
amnenion@xover:~/testr > mp3info test.mp3
File: test.mp3
Title:                                  Track:
Artist:  testartist
Album:                                  Year:
Comment:                                Genre:  [255]

seems to work :)

it also has an interactive mode (console+gtk) and can be found at
http://metalab.unc.edu/mp3info/
