I had a similar problem RH7.2, installer mozilla 0.9.2. I installed the 
spellchecker (as root), then closed mozilla and restarted as regular 
user. No spellchecker. I started mozilla as root again and had 
spellchecker. Closed it down, then I had spellchecker as regular user, 
too.  (Seems I saw this "run it as root first fix" for some other 
problem on these mozilla lists...)

I didn't change themes, but I use classic for root and modern for user.
