I agree. The default action of the mark button is rather pointless, you
have to click on a message before the mark button becomes active and
then that message automatically becomes marked as read. if you want to
toggle the message state then you can just click in the column where the
green 'unread' icons appear in the message list.
I think making it default to mark thread read or mark all read would
prove to be a lot more useful currently it's only useful if you use the
pull down menu (personally I miss the days when the shortcust for mark
all read was simply A with no modifier key).
