Spring has made its way to Carver County, and with it there have been many
arrivals to the area over the past several days. Along with birds, frogs have
been out for a few days, and the first Mourning Cloak was out today. Greater
White-fronted Goose numbers have been good this spring(at least compared to my
expectations for the area). Tundra Swan numbers have been fairly good but not
impressive in the area. Duck numbers have been outstanding with thousands in
the area. The most numerous have been the normally numerous species: Mallard,
Ring-necked Duck, and Lesser Scaup. There have been many more Northern
Pintail in the area compared to what I am used to seeing in the spring as well.
Most larger lakes in the county are still ice-covered, but they are getting
closer to clearing. Today I found 72 species in the county with 65 at Rapids
Lake MVNWR and the others in rural areas. Today near New Germany I saw a
probable Great-tailed Grackle following a Common Grackle. It flew across a
road in front of me as I was driving, so I can't say for sure that is what it
was. Arrivals for the week are below.
