While conducting a bird survey on Garden Island, Lake of the Woods County on the morning of June 15, I observed a breeding plumaged Arctic Tern on the sand spit on the east end of the island. The bird allowed close approach and stayed in the area for at least two hours. The bird was not seen when we first landed on the island so probably just arrived when I first saw it. Also present were Franklin's, Ring-billed and Herring Gulls. Garden Island is a State Recreation Area, part of the Minnesota State Park system. It can only be reached by boat, 21 miles by water from Zippel Bay State Park. I believe this is the first record for Arctic Tern in the Lake of the Woods area. Bob Janssen
