I haven't seen that error message before. Did you say you are in MonoDevelop, not VisualStudio? In VisualStudio I had to open ConfigurationManager and check "Deploy" before that sample would deploy. (I also had to make sure I specifically targeting an AVD with Google Maps installed on it, or I'd get the "shared library not found" error.)
Is the .apk there under \bin\debug?
