I found a solution for my problem. I only added the SharpZLib as project reference to the main project. This was not necessary with MonoDroid 4.0

Project references certainly should work, though the referenced project needs to be in the same project solution (.sln). Is the ICSharpCode.SharpZLibMobile project in your .sln?
