To follow up on this, the code works on an Android 2.3 device and an Android 
3.2 tablet.  It fails in an Android 2.3 and 4.0 simulator. Wally

This is in the Android 4.0 simulator.  yeah, I know its "the simulator" and all 
the hassle that goes with it.
