Hi

First +1 for ISV offerings [yellow] pages.

I completely agree with You, but have constant doubt regarding those questions:
  • to unplug my PC from power outlet then I'll have most secure PC on the world
  • to put everything I do programming open source and hope to live from support and donations
Everything is about trade-off to calculate cost/benefit...
If it takes 24 hours to reverse engineer my app, why bother concealing technology and obfuscating?!
On the other hand when it comes to bare existence question (like here in Croatia for small start-ups)
then every dime counts.
Mobile market is great opportunity because we can rely on numbers lowering the price and hope
for huge numbers of purchases, again here in Croatia though the piracy percentage is still high 54%
for last 4 years acording to BSA, but people are buying apps on AppStore and AndroidMarket. So
this shows there exists this thin line where people decide not participate in piracy.
It takes more than concealing, obfuscation and banning warez sites to stop someone from stealing
meaning it is more in upbringing, ethics and moral values.
Again some open source projects showed us that it is possible to live well with that concept of
giving and sharing.

It would be meaningful to have yellow pages where ISV could optionally state their offerings and
details about their products if they want to. This could be +1 for technology if I could reference
this data to convince skeptics about positive values.

Thanks and regards

Hi,
Websites have gained this attention in the past and many companies invest heavily in concealing the identity of the technology used, for one simple reason - security.

Fingerprinting is the process of identifying what technology is used to construct web services and applications. It is considered murky and rests in a grey area of the law, which is counter intuitive to the concept of saying with pride - this wonderful application is proudly built with MonoDroid!

One challenge with Android marketplace, or any commercial offering in general - software piracy.
Apps built with Monodroid are not as easy to reverse engineer, due to the abstraction layered runtime and required dependencies, possibly true, possibly not - this would require further clarification to be justified as realistic statement.

From personal experience, a recent project in which I was involved, the entire suite of applications were reverse engineered and made available as warez sites, within 24 hours of releasing 'lite' versions on Android market. This demonstrated how useful the code obfuscation methods, within the Android SDK and apps developed with Eclipse are.

Yellow pages provides lists of companies that provide services. They do not state what type of locks or alarm systems are used to secure the premises and being that with the internet we are in a world where everything is instantly connected, good or bad, were all sharing the same space.

Maybe it would be a good idea to have an ISV offerings page within MonoDroid / MonoTouch, for people to offer their services relating to development and consulting.

Best Regards,

Glen

Im also interested to see monodroid apps.
