Thanks for all the replies. When it stops raining I'll get out and take a look at the filler pipe. Re Andy's questions, it is only noticeable when driving, not when idling or with engine off, and seems to come from the front rather than the rear. Not sure whether the +4 has a carbon canister - where would that be located please? many thanks Ian

Is the smell present when the car is being driven? If yes it is most likely to be a fuelling issue with the injectors, or a high pressure fuel line leak, all other causes would not be strong enough to persist. Is the odour more prevalent at the front or the rear of the car , front , most likely engine compartment , rear , more likely fuel tank/lines. I don't know if your 2007 car would have a stainless tank , if it does then it is most unlikely to have corroded through in 5 years, mild steel is possible (but rather unlikely) One particular place where there is a vibration/fretting issue is the bottom of the fuel filler hose where is clamps onto the fuel tank. You have to remove the plate behind the spare wheel carrier in order to see this (on a 2 seater, not sure about a 4 seater) but it is not difficult to remove , and you can then inspect the hose closely. I don't know if the +4 of 2007 vintage has a carbon cannister to deal with fuel vapours (I think this may be +8s only) if it does then check that this has not become filled up by overfilling with fuel on occasion. Sorry not to be able to pinpoint things more accurately but we are rather shooting in the dark until we have more information. It turned out to be the fuel tank: it had corroded through from where it was sitting on, and fretting against, the wooden supporting boards. I found out by disconnecting the filler and hose and peering inside the tank with a torch. This revealed a rusty spot on the bottom of the tank. Eventually the leak became bad enough to manifest itself as a slight dampness of the boards, but it never did leak fast enough to leave a puddle or even a damp spot on the garage floor. It always evaporated and left a nasty smell, which found its way into our adjoining house. I had a new tank fitted and lashings of Waxoyl applied to the boards and tank prior to installation. So far so good. > >There are other things it could be - corroded or perished fuel lines are quite likely. > >Regards, >Owen. >----- Original Message ----- >>From: Ian Wilson >>To: mogtalk2 >>Sent: Sunday, June 10, 2012 6:42 PM >>Subject: [mogtalk2] Petrol fumes Plus 4 >> >> >>New to this group so apologies if I transgress!
