In the B of B Spitfires would not  inoften take a bullet in their glycol 
coolant tanks. This would result in an impressive stream of white vapor and the 
immediate need to head home.
The German fighter pilots incorrectly interpreted this as a "kill" when in fact 
the Spits usually made it back with a very over heated Merlin.
