I would have thought that your lights would be dim at tickover and brighten
as the engine is revved if battery were defective.

If the alternator were on the blink your voltmeter would be showing less
than 12 volts. An Ammeter would show discharge rather than charge.

I had a battery suddenly fail on me once (Mog 2000 at Canterbury). I had
been out doing a demonstration to the husband of Liz's friend with whom we
were staying (showing off!) and went over a couple of humps with large
thumps on landing and all seemed fine.

Next morning car wouldn't start and so I called out RAC who eventually got
it started with a power pack thingie and suggested I drive behind them to
the nearest kwik fit type place. The guy got a call and had to leave me to
complete last few miles on our own and I left the car ticking over whilst I
checked that they

a, had a battery and

b, would fit it, before switching off.

I had been extremely careful not to stall on the drive there! Next issue was
how to get the battery out. A call to Brands Hatch Morgan revealed that it
was supposed to be dropped beneath the car ('94 +8) but as we had switched
off and started from above with a lot of weeping, wailing and gnashing of
teeth and a few choice words we got it out from above.

Good luck

Colin

Hi Colin I was thinking it may be a Scottish battery objecting to the lack
of Scottish drizzle

Lights dim on battery; go out when ignition tried - again, flat battery
symptoms

My Q is specific - if the charging system (alternator) is faulty,
would/should I have any early warnings?

best

John

Sounds more like an earth/ battery connection issue.

Do the lights still operate when they are switched on? If they do, try
turning the key and they ought to go out if the is a connection issue.

It could also be the solenoid on the starter or a relay which powers the
solenoid, although a relay to operate a relay is maybe a long shot.

Bet you never had this sort of thing whilst you lived in Scotland!! To you
and Judi

So some advice will be greatly appreciated.

Came home last night (25m drive) with headlights on; nights are drawing in.

Switched off on drive; opened garage, tried to start and battery flat!

Before I rush out and replace the battery, I will have it properly tested
but to do that it needs to be fully charged so I wont know the final outcome
until tomorrow morning. Hopefully, it is just an old battery at the end of
its life, but if not .?

Fan belt is fine and nicely tight so am I right in thinking that if the
alternator was failing to charge, the ammeter and/or ignition light would
have given me some prior warning? My ammeter has always shown a positive
charge, some way between 13 (mid-point) and 15. Yesterday was no exception.

Should the battery be OK, what do I look at next?

Many thanks
