|
Understanding how a Mass Spectroscopy works can create a deeper appreciation for this powerful tool. |
;) |
In mass spectrometry, a substance is bombarded with an electron beam having sufficient energy to fragment the molecule.
The positive fragments which are produced (cations and radical cations) are accelerated in a vacuum through a magnetic
field and are sorted on the basis of mass-to-charge ratio. Since the bulk of the ions produced in the mass spectrometer
carry a unit positive charge, the value m/e is equivalent to the molecular weight of the fragment. The analysis of
mass spectroscopy information involves the re-assembling of fragments, working backwards to generate the original molecule.
A very low concentration of sample molecules is allowed to leak into the ionization chamber (which is under a very high vacuum) where
they are bombarded by a high-energy electron beam. The molecules fragment and the positive ions produced are accelerated through a
charged array into an analyzing tube. The path of the charged molecules is bent by an applied magnetic field. Ions having low mass (low momentum)
will be deflected most by this field and will collide with the walls of the analyzer. Likewise, high momentum ions will not be deflected enough
and will also collide with the analyzer wall. Ions having the proper mass-to-charge ratio, however, will follow the path of the analyzer, exit
through the slit and collide with the Collector. This generates an electric current, which is then amplified and detected. By varying the strength
of the magnetic field, the mass-to-charge ratio which is analyzed can be continuously varied.
The output of the mass spectrometer shows a plot of relative intensity vs the mass-to-charge ratio (m/e). The most intense peak in the spectrum is
termed the base peak and all others are reported relative to it's intensity. The peaks themselves are typically very sharp, and are often simply
represented as vertical lines.

ACTurbo Windows 2000 Based Data Acquisition Upgrade for Bruker AC & AM Spectrometers |
The ACTurbo is a multiple Digital Signal Processor (DSP), Windows 2000 / XP-based Data Acquisition Upgrade for Bruker NMR spectrometers
equipped with Aspect 3000 computers. The ACTurbo Real-Time NMR System is designed to replace the Aspect 3000 computer including the associated
computer peripherals, digitizer, pulse programmer, offset oscillators and Fourier filters. All the existing functions including the use of the
SCM (System Controlled Microprocessor) are retained.
The ACTurbo offers an easy way to convert an NMR spectrometer with an obsolete data acquisition system into a modern instrument.
At a fraction of the cost, this solution is an elegant alternative to total replacement of the spectrometer. Regular software upgrades
are available from MR Resources at no extra cost, also making the ACTurbo option very attractive insuring that the upgraded instrument
will truly remain state-of-the-art.

Cryogenic Fill Community Bulletin |
Efficient operation of your NMR facility begins with a knowledgeable and responsible supplier
of liquid helium and liquid nitrogen. MR Resources starts where the others leave off. We have created
a cryogen distribution system specifically for Magnetic Resonance Facilities. MR Resources is the
largest independent supplier of NMR cryogens. We have a proven track record of expert cryogen service
across the United States.
How many times have you attempted to fill your magnet with Liquid Helium and found yourself unsure
if you were doing it correctly?
- Is my magnet's current Liquid Helium level at a point where the coil is partially exposed?
- What do I do differently if it is?
- Am I filling it too fast…or too slow?
- Is the pressure in the dewar where it's supposed to be for my particular type of magnet?
- What do I do if the fill line goes "soft" while I'm doing a fill?
You may not know all the answers to these important questions, but this much is true, if the magnet
is not filled in the proper manner it will quench causing
significant "down time" for your lab, not to mention the exorbitant costs associated
with bringing the magnet back up to field.
What would it be worth to your lab to not have to worry about such issues?
MR Resources can take over the responsibility of properly filling your NMR Magnet so you don't have to.
You are trained to do analysis & experiments utilizing your spectrometer. We are trained to take
care of ALL aspects regarding your NMR spectrometer. MR Resources' Helium Fill Contracts allow you to
do your work, while we do ours. Our engineers will look at your magnets
specifications and arrange the proper scheduling to come to your lab and fill your
magnets with Liquid Helium, thus both assuming responsibility for the proper filling
of your magnets and freeing up your time for your lab work.
If you prefer to do your own magnet fills, we can also SUPPLY your cryogens as well.
