rationale:
Backus actually considered FP a serious programming language (or at
least a serious improvement over FORTRAN). Using a combinator
language (like FP) exposes the programmer to a paradigm not seen
today outside of shell command pipelines. It's an interesting
excercise, sort of the antithesis of Object-Orientedness.
