IME a bigger problem is that it makes it far harder than it should be to write code that reads code. I'm still not convinced that I've got it 100% correct. And given that there is no standard way of assigning meaning to the various levels of dottiness, using version strings with multiple dots in is pointless. If there were any benefit at all from using them I might be more inclined to respect them, but there are no benefits, therefore their use is a bug, as is the existence of version.pm.
