Cynical reason: Because otherwise code I write stays locked up in my employer's intellectual property. Convincing them to release it as open source is easier than convincing them to let me continue to use it in my next job. Especially if said employer goes out of business.

ROI reason: For the bug reports and patches -- the free labor nearly balances my additional support workload, and makes the code better.

Karma reason: Payback for other people's open source code that I use.
