Recently I had occasion to discuss with Damian Conway whether the
continued presence of distribution Perl6::Say was still warranted. We
both agreed that it was time for this distro to retire to the backpan.
Perl6::Say was created by Damian in the early part of this decade as one
of the first examples of how Perl 6 syntax could be backported into Perl
5. I recall Damian illustrating the use of its say() function in his
closing talk at YAPC::NA::2003 in Boca Raton (was that the one about 24
modules in 24 hours?). The Perl6::Say distribution made its CPAN debut
in March 2004; I became co-maintainer in July 2006. It worked well on
Perl 5.8 and somewhat well on Perl 5.6.2.
But with the release of Perl 5.10.0 in December 2007, Perl6::Say's days
became numbered. Why say Perl6::Say::say() when you can simply say
say()? It is my belief that, cet. par., you should always be using
either the latest version of Perl 5 or the immediate preceding version,
I felt that the release of Perl 5.12.0 would be an appropriate time to
send the Perl6::Say CPAN distribution out to pasture. Damian agreed,
and so tonight I scheduled it for deletion via PAUSE.
If you'd like to visit Perl6::Say before it goes off into the shadows,
please do so before Sunday at http://search.cpan.org/dist/Perl6-Say/.
Thank you very much.
