So, you have the same sort of target on the gentoo machine. Does your @INC include some other 5.8.x directories there? (This makes me wonder if you wouldn't see the same issue in upgrading gentoo's perl where your 5.10 doesn't have the @INC entries for 5.8.8.) One could amend @INC (via PERL5LIB or otherwise) to pickup the pure-perl code.
