  That's not really fair to RH in my opinion.  If the package doesn't
  exist, or isn't the version you would like you have two decent 
  options: 

  1) Remove the package and install from source, realizing of course
     that this removes all package management from the application. 

  2) Take the existing SRPM SPEC file and convert it to use the
     version, compile time options, etc. you want and build a real
     RPM of it.
