There's also the metux MPM project which was meant to replace the perchild MPM, but that project seems to be mostly dead, too.
No fear, there is Metux MPM http://www.metux.de/mpm/en/ which should do the same and better. I haven't tried it myself, but it looks like this is what Nick wants to do and report back how did it go. I'd expect that modperl2's build will blow up, since it has no clue what metux MPM means.
Note that it's still in beta state: http://www.metux.de/mpm/en/?patpage=status
The metux site is quite old. The last version, already done by somebody else (http://www.sannes.org/metuxmpm/), is for 2.0.48 (from 11/2003), so this doesn't seem very promising.
Have you tried it? May be it just works? FWIW, Enrico Weigelt who wrote it seems to advertise it in the recent posts to httpd-dev:
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=apache-httpd-dev&w=2&r=1&s=Metux&q=b
May be it's time that Enrico tries to get it integrated within the core. I've CC'ed Enrico in hope that he can explain himself what's the real status.
