I have just uploaded:

Apache-AuthenSmb-0.71

This fixes the $r->log_reason/$r->log_error problem in version 0.70.  

Thanks for the thread, but I feel that it would be more appropriate to 
use Apache::AuthenCache for the purposes stated in the thread.
