Maybe I've been bitten by an autoupgrade mechanism on that system. modemmanager, libqmi and other packages *have* been upgraded, e.g.: modemmanager from 1.14.12-0.2 to 1.20.0-1~bpo11+1 libqmi from 1.26.10-0.1 to 1.32.0-1~bpo11+1 Downgrading to the older versions solved the problem immediately.
