Hi all, here’s a quick update/reminder on our data review process.

First off, thank you for continuing to request data review when adding new
telemetry probes and new data collection systems. The data review process is in
place because we want to be conscientious about the telemetry we are
collecting, and make sure that it serves a specific purpose, and is removed
when it is no longer needed, so thank you! We are trying to improve the
transparency of that process, as well as bring new data peers into the process
so we aren’t bottlenecking.

Towards the first goal, we’re trying to reduce the back and forth of data
review by explicitly setting out the explicit data review criteria that must be
satisfied to pass data review.

1. Flag one of the data peers (for Mobile, this is me, :liuche). In your
request, answer the questions in this data request form
<https://github.com/mozilla/data-review/blob/master/request.md> and include it
as part of the request (e.g., paste it as a Bugzilla comment, or include it as
a comment on the Github issue). Make sure you include where you will be
publicly documenting the telemetry that will be collected. The goal of this
step is to make sure that you have explicit reasons for collecting the
telemetry, and a plan to use that data.

2. That’s it! If you’ve filled out the documentation for probes you want to add
and have included public documentation, you’ll get a speedy r+ because that’s
the information we need. If you don’t hear back, please feel free to ping the
data steward!

This process will likely be a little longer for adding new telemetry systems,
which might require looping in Legal/Security, but for adding new probes, which
is the vast majority of data review, this should help decrease the amount of
time you have to wait for data review.
