thanks.. seems way too many addon developers not knowing about this issue. The addon-SDK had SDK/pannel which worked for my usecase (I had a desktop version for testing) and may have covered many other scenarios. There is also https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Add-ons/WebExtensions/API/browserAction/openPopup and I would think this could be easilly made available to addons - perhaps with a special permission and do the same trick safely.
