The updater does check — indeed, it does check when you install via Play! — but we don't serve updates to release users.
Changing this hasn't been a huge priority, because the vast majority of our users are either on Nightly/Aurora (which do receive updates) or use Play (which updates on our behalf). Self-installed release users make up a pretty tiny population, AIUI. That said, we've made some small steps toward making this possible, so I wouldn't rule it out for the future. I commented on the bug with the current state of the world.
