To determine if you have a mjpeg encoded AVI use lavinfo:
 > lavinfo ultravox.avi
video_frames=6751
video_width=720
video_height=576
video_inter=b
....

You should get a output like that. If that work we have a problem with 
lavplay/glav.

How did you "export" the file from lives ?

I have just downloaded/compiled/installed lives but didn't find out how 
you "exported" the video ?
