Yeah, I've been considering this option. But then I thought that the
machines which would need that are the ones with little memory, and on
such machines the user might not be happy to see 4 MB of memory used
all the time even when he/she doesn't use the Zoran device. So I didn't
want to do it by default.

It could be a module parameter, but then this would make the zoran
driver more complex as it would have to be able to handle both
allocation strategies at runtime. It didn't seem worth the effort. But
depending on what other zoran developers think, I may give it a try.
