-i 1:n works, the command was
lavrec --software-encoding -f a -U -a 8 -l 80 -g 352x240 -i n:1 test.avi
This plays well, with sound, on mplayer or on my company windoz Xp,
Media-player. However, I think the manual and the command line usage needs
correction. It states that -i [p|P|n|N| etc.. The reason I could not
capture because I used -i n. > > > A new problem - maybe subject to a new

success(yet) -U results in error message '--U invalid option' --use-write
results in error message '-use-write unrecognized option' The above
test.avi plays with glav +n -p S -a:0 test.avi but of course, no sound. If
I set a:1 or some other valid number for a: then I have the soundcard
error you are talking about (mapping audio buffer).

We are almost there...

As far as Stefan Fendt's comment about YUV 4:2:0 and bttv card I'll cross
that bridge when I get there. Or is the above problem with glav and
playing sound related to YUV 4:2:0?

Thanks both of you - Janos
