If I set a:1 or some other valid number for a: then I have the soundcard error you are talking about (mapping audio buffer).
We are almost there... As far as Stefan Fendt's comment about YUV 4:2:0 and bttv card I'll cross that bridge when I get there. Or is the above problem with glav and playing sound related to YUV 4:2:0?
