I had been told that the 'title 1' part on the button was unnecessary, and possibly undesirable, since there was only one title. Putting that back, combined with the <post>resume;</post> statement seems to have done the trick. The only remaining problem is how to test it. Sadly, it's 4.8GB. I don't want to use dual-layer disks as coasters :-) I'll have to try to find a way to get xine to play direct from the directory.
