djpeg and ppmtoy4m can be used as an alternative for jpeg2yuv:

djpeg 20070225_2710.JPG  | ppmtoy4m -r -n 200 -F 25:1 | y4mscaler -I 
sar=1:1 -O preset=DVD -O infer=PRESERVE_X -O infer=EXACT  | mpeg2enc -f 
8 -o photo2.m2v
