You should try the new 1.9.0-rc1 (found on SF) there the avi handling is
different, and is able to create files larger than 2GB.
The 1.8.0 version can handle quicktime files larger than 2GB.

The mjpegtools can handle several avi files, and treat them as one
large, without any problems.
