Read the FAQ; you need the bigphysarea patch for this to work fine.  
I'd suggest to use overlay-capture. That may fail because of the  
chipset. In that case, change pci slots or try using noacpi or  
acpi=off as boot options. Other pci settings may also help, such as  
changing pci latency timing (see kernel documentation for more  
details here, I can't remember them myself either).

For capture, use lavrec. For tv viewing, don't use xawtv cvs  
versions, use older xawtv versions or use something like kdetv or so.
