That is the first time that I hear of that problem. 
On my machine I have X.org 6.8.2 on a Suse 10 with a Matrox P650 (HW
acceleration turned off), the Composite extension is not installed till
now. Whenn I add it as Extension to the server. The Machine crashes when
I start X11, so it is hard for me to do any tests. 

Would it be possible for you to do a backtrace ? That would provide
additional information.
