That is really strange - I can easily believe there are issues with
the DV encoders (and that ffmpeg's is better) - but I can't seem to
come up with a "how" that would cause a player dependent problem
when viewing the final product. Any ideas/theories about that?

ffmpeg's is better - I might still have the notes (should be in the
mailinglist archive from a few years ago) showing a marked average
bitrate drop in the final .m2v file when switching to ffmpeg's DV
decoder.

8bit 4:2:2 uncompressed (the original 10bit 4:2:2 file is about 25%
and is on another array that's spun down at the moment - the
filters, and initial processing was done in 10bit mode then a 8bit
version was exported for final processing and encoding).
A 1TB array is (relatively) cheap these days - $850 for a 1394a (also
has 1394a connectors). Check out the LaCie products at
