There is a difference between MPG and MJPEG. You do not edit MPEG
(.mpg) files with mjpegtools.

Quite correct. If the file is not MJPEG (in either the AVI or
Quicktime) then glav (and most of mjpegtools) can not open it. IF
the file is a Quicktime file then you will need libquicktime installed
on the system.

Is the data from a video capture card? Or is it from a 'rip'd DVD
or a MPEG file that was downloaded from the Internet? The first
(capture card data) can be edited and then encoded, the second
(already encode movies) can NOT be edited with mjpegtools.
mjpegtools is used to _create_ MPEG files, not edit them ;)
