Quite so. Nothing's been done in eons to make sure it is working
correctly although no effort has been made to intentionally break it.

Oh, ok - it's actually 1.7.0 (which is what the 1.6.3 will be
called when it moves from ReleaseCandidate status to Released status).
Hmmm, I wouldn't be too surprised if field encoding has been
broken in cvs for a long time and no one has noticed. The comments
(in addition to the "not currently maintained/supported") in the code
and/or documentation seem to indicate that "-I 2" doesn't gain much.
That probably is why noone's made sure it actually functions ;)
For what it is worth I get the segfault too - seems to happen just
as the encoder is creating the first frame in the first GOP.
