Bingo. Thanks! I had a bit of trouble finding the utility yuvtoy4m that Steven mentioned, but I grabbed a version of your patch from the mplayer-dev list and tweaked my copy of mplayer. The patch didn't go well (I forget which tarball I've got now) but I worked at the unhappy chunks until it was consistent with your original vision.
