Hi all

For the benefit of those checking list archives ...

Way back in February I posted some questions about blocky artifacts being
observed in mpeg2enc output in scenes with rapid movement. Included was a
pointer to

  http://www.atrad.com.au/~jwoithe/mpeg/

at which were examples of the effects as well as the results of tests I had
carried out. The artifacts meant that motion appeared jerky even though
there was no error with regard to interlacing.

Over the past few months I have been carrying out further tests while
consulting with various people, the results which are also now available at
the above URL. The practical upshot is that the artifacts I have been
seeing appear to be coming from libdv's encoder (during rendering from
cinelerra earlier in the processing pipeline) rather than from mpeg2enc
itself. It appears that while libdv's decoder works reasonably well, its
encoder isn't quite up to scratch (at least with respect to PAL footage
anyway). Work continues elsewhere on the dv encoding issue.

In summary, mpeg2enc appears to be in the clear with respect to this
problem.

Regards
  jonathan
