You're comparing two different things, so it's not as easy as "is 2
smaller than 1"? VHS is interlaced, but only at half of the lines as
your actual TV/cable display, if I'm correct.

The text means, as you said above, that "given a perfect source, -d2
will result in a better final picture than VHS". Given your scenario, I
wouldn't capture at -d1 since it gains very little. However, there will
always be some gain. If that gain is worth your previous time can only
be answered by yourself.
