...it helps if X is restarted so the XFree v4l module can see the newly 
loaded modules from driver_zoran...Doh! Plus I hadn't got the v4l2-common 
kernel module loaded, though I'm not sure it is required (lsmod doesn't 
show it as used). xvinfo and studio -t both show the video4linux port now 
and lvs runs fine.

btw, is memory reservation (setting a boot argument of mem=nnn (where nnn is 
~4Mb short of system memory)) still required with a 2.6 kernel? I only ran 
a short (~1 minute) capture which ran fine without that.
