For the first try you do not need to generate a menu. 

just run:
dvdauthor -o /directory file.mpg file2.mpg
dvdauthor -o /driectory -T 

And than burn the disk. You will have no menu, but who cares for the
first try ;)
Menus come later, and there you will get much help on the dvdauthor
mailinglist.
