A. Watch the video on your computer via the BUZ's tv overlay function.  The
   DC10+ can overlay and do mjpeg capture at once, the buz is almost the same. 
   I did have problems if I tried to start and stop overlay while capturing,
   and I don't know if that's fixed.  Just make the window really small.

B. Buy a second cheap non-codec TV card, feed the buz output into it, watch
   via your computer with that card.

C. Add a feature to lavrec to write out a jpeg file every X frames.  Should
   be easy to do.  Now you can just look at the jpeg.

D. Just listen to the audio via your sound card's line out, and tell by that.
