        I have never had much luck splicing (editing) mpeg files.   The 
        resulting files will usually play using a softare player but
        hardware players are allergic to the discontinuities created at
        the edit points.   And keeping the audio and video in sync is 
        difficult too.

        Hmmm, that's strange.   How are you doing the captures?   I've
        had no trouble with 2+ hour captures (start the laserdisc playing,
        let the automatic side change happen, and come back 2 hours later to
        ^C the dvgrab process).
