        That would seem to indicate that you're using an older version -
        perhaps the problem you're having was fixed at the same time the
        error message was removed (or at least spell checked ;)).

        The output of ppmtoy4m will place a header containing the size
        information in the file.   On one of the .y files do a "head -n 1"
        and  you should see something similar to 

YUV4MPEG2 W720 H480 F30000:1001 Ib A10:11

        If not then the creation of the .y file wasn't correct - could
        be a bug jpeg2yuv that's been fixed since the version you're
        using.   

        A release candidate is being worked on now so if trying the cvs
        version isn't of interest then waiting a few days for the next
        tarball might be a good idea.
