        You can see a slight  loss of detail and the blockiness is
        somewhat more apparent.   Since the bitrate ended up being
        so low I would be tempted to increase the quality (change
        -q 8 to -q 7 or perhaps even -q 6) and trade some play time
        for quality.

        I found the image  to look better on a LCD (portable DVD player
        or computer monitor) than on my TV set.   Probably due to the
        TV set's blacklevel/brightness not being set right - it is an old
        set that should be replaced (it overscans quite a bit more than
        one would expect).

        To me the interesting (but not completely unexpected) part was
        that both of the standalone players had no trouble with the CVD
        format even though I used 48k audio instead of the (S)VCD 
        standard 44.1k
