Well, the USB adapter is UHCI, listed at IRQ19, and it works (& shows up in /proc/interrupts). Maybe I did something wrong when I built the kernel? I did use the new kernel option [*] Allocate 3rd-level pagetables from highmem because it says it's less wasteful for large memory systems. Could this be a problem with zoran? Should an IRQ appear in /proc/interrupts if I have not yet successfully modprobed the driver for the device? If so, then this probably has nothing to do with driver-zoran.
